The Apartment
It is a cool day in mid October. You slept in since you are on vacation from work. You're awaken by loud banging at the front door of your apartment. You reluctantly jump up and reach for your phone on the end table, but it's missing. The banging persists. You jump up and throw on a random t-shirt from the laundry basket in the hall. You yell down the hall, 'Who's there?'
"It's Rory! Hurry and open up!" The banging stops suddenly. You're long time friend Rory responds. He sounds frantic. As you get closer you hear a woman's scream and a police sires roaring. Your cellphone on the kitchen counter is buzzing off the charger. You fling the door open without looking and dash for the phone. The ringing stops before you can answer. You have 27 missed calls. You look back at the door, but no one's there.
Check The Hall 1
You step into the hall. Looking both ways you find no one. Back into the apartment you close and lock the door. You notice the screams and sirens stop. Looking back at your phone it is just a couple minutes past noon. You look through the phone, but the missed calls are gone. You turn up the volume of the TV. Shrugging your shoulders, you flip the channel and step into the kitchen. The TV plays a random crime show. There is a scrolling warning across the bottom of the screen, but you pay no mind as you go through the fridge.
Just as you reach for a jug of juice, the phone rings on the counter and there is a banging at the door. It frightens you. You jump back, dropping the juice on the ground. The lid pops open and it spills across the floor. You shout as you pick up the jug quickly, 'who's there'? The banging and ringing stop together. Police sirens roar past again.
"It's Rory! Hurry! Open the door!" He sounds frantic.
You pocket the phone and race to the door. Out the peephole, you see nothing, but darkness. It is pitch black in the hall besides the one dim light in front of the door. You call out to you Rory.
"Hurry! Let me in! Let me in! Let me in! Let me in!" There is one last room shaking bang on the door with the last call. You jump back. It is quiet again. Even the TV is silent. You are surprised by a buzzing in the kitchen. As you turn towards the kitchen you hear a door close. Your bedroom door shuts. The shower cuts on.
You lean over and look into the kitchen in the direction of the buzzing noise. You see a phone the looks awfully similar to your own. You quickly check your pockets, but your phone isn't there. Confused, you look around your apartment.
